We rarely stop laughing when we spend time together; the Goldens are just like that. There’s nothing like genuine laughter and joy for making amazing pictures, and we somehow never run short on that in our sessions.

In all reality (regardless of the million excuses I hear from parents for not being photographed with their children), the only necessary ingredients for amazing photographs are:

  1. Connection.
You love each other. I mean, sometimes life is frustrating (I KNOOOOW), but you do. There’s a reason you’re a family, and sometimes all it takes to remember how precious it is are photographs – visual proof that you can really enjoy each other. You love each other, so let it show!
  2. Physical affection.
I know sometimes you don’t know what to do with your hands, or how to stand, or how to smile – so forget all that. If you don’t know what to do with your hands, touch someone you love. A hand on a shoulder, an arm around a waist, a kiss on the forehead.
  3. Play.
Forget the stress of the camera, forget about wondering what to do or how to act, and focus on your family. Play together the way you do when no one’s watching.
  4. Ability to let go of perfection.
Let me worry about the lighting, and your good side, and whether your kid smiles or throws a fit, and if your kid doesn’t want to participate. Sometimes the best images happen when your little introvert needs some alone time. Case in point: my favorite image from this session…..And that’s it. That’s all you need. Not “a perfect home” or “the right outfit” or “to lose ten pounds” or or or or or or or……

    That’s all.

There’s roughly ten million reasons why the holidays are awesome, and at the top of the list is peppermint flavored everything. But that’s not what this post is about. Coming in just under the peppermint thing is big family gatherings with fun people, and I LOVE photographing those. The Conroys are fun, delightfully chaotic (which is my favorite quality in a big family), and [obviously] photogenic.

Enjoy. 🙂

I love Sam Hurd’s work, and I jumped at the chance to take his one-day Epic workshop. A small and insanely talented group of photogs gathered in a downtown Nashville loft to spent the day learning from and challenging each other. Sam shared his workflow, his processing, his techniques, his client process. We worked with lovely and gracious models, with Sam walking us through how he directs his clients, uses light, and frames his shots. I’m so grateful for the chance to stretch myself creatively. It’s been a long time since I moved outside my own comfort zone of creativity, y’all; I needed this.

I spent most of the day taking notes as fast as my hands could write, but I did grab my camera for the live shoot portion of the day. Enjoy!

We were worn OUT after that day. Carly and I had planned to go out and enjoy the city that night, but we were exhausted. So instead we hit up Love Peace Pho for an incredible (and quiet!) dinner (and who should we meet but Pharrell’s doppelganger). Then straight to our air bnb to SLEEP – because we had plans for a sunrise session the next morning. We had an amazing model (can you say Penny Lane?!? The resemblance is uncanny) and an amazing sunrise and of course an amazing backdrop (I love you forever, Nashville). Enjoy.

So there we were, shooting away, when we were approached by this dude. I’m pretty wary of strange men in general, and strange panhandling men who ask me the monetary value of my gear in specific, but I was stopped in my tracks when our model spoke directly to him like a fellow human being, and invited him to be in a picture. …Guys, I really hate it when I realize I’ve been acting like everything I hate. It was a beautiful moment. He went away walking taller. chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0169chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0170chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0171chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0172chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0173chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0174chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0175chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0176chattanooga-lifestyle-photographer_0177

That’s all, folks.
